Nor Cal Contemplation

The darker it gets, the more brightly the light shines. — Colin Moore

20190407aIn summer, when the light is hot, we step into the cool dark shade.  In winter, when the shade is cold, we step into the lukewarm light.

In spring, as in autumn, the light and shade share a momentary dance of connection, celebrating equality before separating to extremes again.

Light and dark, hot and cold, good and bad, rich and poor — everything spins on the same central point, on the delicate tip of a pin.

Keep to the center, the equinox of all.

Let your workings remain a mystery. Just show people the results. — Lao Tzu, Tao 36

For years, I’ve been madly in love with this mighty shade tree on the campus where I teach…

Perhaps fool-heartedly, disregarding the Tao, I share here several studies in colored pencil done before the attempt to paint…

Practice may not always make things perfect, but it sure makes trying things hella more fun.

So much more to enjoy this year!

Hola, Boca de Tomatlan

Just spent a wonderful week with Bob Masla & Friends at his Casa de los Artistas in Boca de Tomatlan, a little fishing village south of Puerto Vallarta, where the mountain-cool Rio Horcones flows into the wide warm Pacific.

Got a lotta sketching done…

Played with watercolors, too…

Took a road trip to El Tuito, a little colonial ranch pueblito in a small, beautiful valley…

Another trip north to Puerto Vallarta for dinner on the beach.

Now that I’m home, it’s time for a long warm bath.

Another Oroville Getaway

Always nice to get outta town, to head over mountains and follow delta rivers.  Nothing like a place to stay with nothing to do — nothing but putting marks on paper.  (Click an image for bigger views.)

Kept drawing fast, whatever was in front of me, then added hues with watercolor paints and pencils.
